Trucks and SUVs, sometimes have a grille mount, making things easier. But that leaves them vulnerable to curbs and errant bumps in the road. The job is easier if the lights mount under the bumper. When the light is positioned lower, more of the ground will be lit. Aim for about 10 to 24 inches above the road surface and below the center of the headlights. This fog light fits into an existing pod.įog lights work best when mounted on or below the bumper. That ensures you won’t have a dead battery because the fog lights were left on.Īfter the wiring is complete, secure your work with plastic ties. They connect to the relay and the battery or an empty switched fuse location-one that only works with the ignition on. You can probably attach the ground wires to existing screws. Black is ground, which goes to any unpainted area. The color-coded wires from the switch connect through the firewall to the coded wires on the lights. If there are no holes, you can drill one, but use a rubber grommet to seal it as effectively as possible. You may have to get on your back to locate a hole, and remove some interior panels and trim. Then run the wiring through one of the dedicated holes in the firewall. Mount the switch in the car in an out-of-the-way location. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. With a factory switch, the fog lights shut off when the high beams are turned on. Fog lamps should only operate with low beams. If you learn that wiring is present in the bumper, you might be able to buy an OEM switch. It’s a good idea to check enthusiast forums for your specific vehicle. Kits come with the lights, brackets, wiring, and switch. Fog light kits range from $20 to about $120, depending on the type. Considering that fog lamps could save your life, a new set is not an expensive purchase. We agree that many performance cars and off-road vehicles look cooler with them, but fog lights also serve an essential safety function. Some car enthusiasts install fog lights strictly for appearances. Yellow light produces less glare and allows your retinas to focus with less strain. A fog light’s beams direct downward at a wide angle to illuminate only the road immediately ahead. The best approach is to install a set of properly adjusted fog lamps. That worsens visibility because high beams place more light on the fog than on the road. So how do you mitigate the risk? First, never use high beams on a foggy road. Fog also makes it difficult to spot danger and judge distances. That’s because fog can reflect bright light, potentially blinding you to oncoming traffic. Once I get my car back from service and figure out what coding needs to be done I'll post it up here.According to the Federal Highway Administration, nearly 40,000 crashes occur yearly in fog. There's also a small alignment tab that needs to be tucked in behind the trim/vent before fully pressing in the clips holding plastic cover in. When replacing the plastic cover make sure to tuck the rear edge in back under the weather stripping. Push the trim/vent back into place and reinstall the torx screw. (Rear fogs will need coding so that button will do nothing, but everything else should work.) Pop in the new switch and check that everything works as before. I would suggest NOT using a pry tool as the gloss plastic surround is fairly fragile and the metal tabs holding the switch in place are part of the switch body. The light switch can be pushed out by reaching behind and pushing on it. It does not need to be removed, just popped out because the top edge of the light switch is tucked in behind it. You can then pop out the trim/vent with your fingers. There's a single torx screw which needs to be removed to release the trim/vent. I used a plastic pry tool and started with the front edge below the trim/vent area. It's held in with 4 clips and does take some effort to remove. Remove the plastic cover on the side of the dashboard. I couldn't find a guide to swapping out this part so here's how you do it: There are several versions of the light switch:Ħ1319493736 - Rear Fogs Only + Night VisionĦ1319493738 - Front Fogs + Rear Fogs + Night Vision I still need to code it to work but it's going in for software updates and its first service soon and I didn't want to change coding until they've done that. I finally tracked down the rear fog light switch for my G30.
